Maha Astami

Place: Temples of Goddess Durga  (22 Oct 2020 )

The night of Maha Astami is called Kalaratri – the 'dark night' – and it reminds people of the tremendous power of the evil forces threatening to engulf the entire Creation into eternal darkness. Hence the evil must be subdued; and the sacrifices are intended to empower the Goddess Durga battling against them. The sacrifices made on this day and night as well are simply awesome, as hundreds of thousands of animals are consigned to the Goddess throughout the nation. Especially the people following the tantric tradition perform, in the darkness of the night, all the vows of sacrifices made through the whole year.
